Wesley Butler, Class of 2019, is a rising senior at Reading High School where he epitomizes a student athlete.
The starting point guard on the 2017 6A State Championship Reading High Boys Basketball Team, Butler’s individual basketball accomplishments on the court are extensive and include, All State 6A 3rd Team 2018, All District 3 Team 2018, Berks County Player of the Year 2018, All Berks County Team 2018 and many MVP and All-Tournament Team recognitions.
Academically, Butler challenges himself by taking Advanced Placement and Honors level courses and repeatedly achieves either Honor Roll or Merit Roll status. His favorite courses are classes related to law.
At Reading High School, Butler has participated in the German Exchange Program spending two weeks in Germany and then hosting a German student in Reading. He served as a student Senator on Senator Schwank’s Model Senate Initiative and as an ambassador for Berks Teens Matter, which strives to prevent teen pregnancy. Butler was a student leader in the Keystone Boys State and received hands on experience in Robert Rules of Order and legislative leadership.
Butler believes in giving back to his community. He runs several free “Workout with Wes” clinics teaching leadership on and off the court as well as basketball skills and drills to Reading youth.
The NAACP Reading Branch recently selected Butler to receive the 2018 Community Youth Impact Award for his distinction in the classroom, his school, and civic performance. He will be honored at the NAACP’s 31st Annual Freedom Fund Gala in October.
In the future, Butler plans to attend a four-year college where he can continue to excel both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
