Early grade reading success is a critical component of learning and a leading indicator of future academic and educational success. Yet over 40% of third graders throughout Berks County are reading below grade level. That means over 2,000 children in our community are four times more likely to drop out of school. Ready.Set.READ! is managed by United Way and tackles this issue by working towards a system of support to boost reading proficiency for students by the end of third grade.Ready.Set.READ! (RSR) programs benefitted over 30,000 children last year. Its Star Reader program works with volunteer tutors and schools to provide support to students in 29 elementary schools. With extra one-on-one practice students may advance faster than they otherwise would have without a tutor.Ready.Set.READ! is currently recruiting volunteers for the following school districts Antietam, Brandywine, Conrad Weiser, Daniel Boone, Exeter, Governor Mifflin, Hamburg, Kutztown, Muhlenberg, Oley Valley, Reading, and Schuylkill Valley. Tutors meet with the children weekly for one hour or twice a month from October through May. If interested in volunteering please contact Darby Wiekrykas at (610) 685-4574 or DarbyW@uwberks.org.
