There are many benefits to learn another language but there are many more on why you should encourage your child to learn another language. Researchers have found the following: Children who study languages are more imaginative, better with abstract ideas, and more flexible in their thinking. They have a greater sensitivity to language and a better ear for listening.Studying a foreign language improves a child’s understanding of his own native language. It opens the door to other cultures and helps the child understand and appreciate people from other countries. It can help them feel connected to their own heritage.Bilingualism is even more applicable to certain career fields, such as national security, public health, tourism, international non-profit management, education, and even jobs in the military. CNN recently reported that jobs in the field of translation are among the fastest growing occupations in the United States, with an anticipated 25,000 job openings by 2020.Most countries have more than one official language — South Africa lists 11, Aboriginal Australia is home to 130 indigenous languages, and many well-educated Indians are comfortable communicating in 4 or more languages! An estimated 60-75% of the world speaks at least two languages (versus only 20% of the population of the United States), making monolingual native English speakers a minority.Researchers found many reasons but these are my favorite two. There is belief that being able to speak another language will make you more tolerant and can encourage people to cut down racism. In other words, it will encourage you to be more open to others. My second favorite reason would have to be traveling. Speaking Spanish, for instance, is incredibly useful for travelling. Have you ever thought of how many Spanish speaking countries you could visit in the world? I would say that it seems we are missing out if we only know one language. If you’re a Latino who knows both English and Spanish you are already at an advantage, so why not try and pick up a third language.
